BALTIMORE ORIOLES GOLD GLOVE WINNERS

JJ Hardy (2012, 2013, 2014) Adam Jones (2009, 2012, 2013, 2014) and Manny Machado (2013, 2015)

Orioles Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver used to say the key to winning was pitching, defense and a three-run home run. Defensive excellence has been a staple of Baltimore baseball as many Gold Glove Awards have been won here. 71 to be exact. Since the award was instituted in 1957, the Orioles have earned more Gold Gloves than any other American League team. Brooks Robinson, whose Hall of Fame plaque says he “established modern standard of excellence for third basemen”, won 16 straight Gold Gloves from 1960 to 1975; including the team’s first five. Center fielder Paul Blair and shortstop Mark Belanger each earned eight Gold Gloves while center fielder Adam Jones, second baseman Bobby Grich and pitchers Jim Palmer and Mike Mussina each won four. Shortstop JJ Hardy, second baseman Davey Johnson and first baseman Eddie Murray have three Gold Gloves apiece. Two-time Orioles Gold Glove winners include second baseman Roberto Alomar, shortstop Luis Aparicio, third baseman Manny Machado, outfielder Nick Markakis, first baseman Rafael Palmiero, shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. and catcher Matt Wieters. It’s only a matter of time before current first baseman Chris Davis and second baseman Jonathan Schoop earn the honor for their defensive excellence.
